Community, Get Out & Play

IMG_3969Started in 2013, the Magic City Discovery Center is a one of a kind children’s museum located in Minot. The museum engages children and their families in learning through discovery, creativity, and play. They believe learning happens best when children can interact and use their hands, which is why the museum is filled with exhibits that motivate interaction and learning. Not only are the children learning, but the MCDC provides social growth opportunities. While a child is at an exhibit, there are other children around to play, talk, create, and learn with. Their exhibits focus on five subjects; science, technology, engineering, art, and math, which is alsoDiscoveryCenterFinished-18 known as STEAM. Exhibits include; giant light bright, magnetic wall, big blue blocks, a toddler play area, and a Lumo Play, which means a large game is projected on the floor and the children interact with the game. For example, if hockey is the game an ice rink would be projected on the floor, the children would interact by running around trying to shoot a puck into the goal. The children can even learn about computer coding with Dash and Dot, the coding robots. The MCDC invites any child to come explore learning from birth to age ten. They offer specialty events such as Whoosh Facebirthday parties and school field trips. They focus on building a safe and fun environment for children. The MCDC is the only children’s science museum for over 100 miles, and they provide a unique experience for children and anyone who visits, and it is affordable for all, with their family packages and punch cards.

The Magic City Discovery Center is currently in its fourth season in a temporary space, inside of the Dakota Territory Air Museum on North Hill. Since they are in a temporary space, they are only open during the winter months. They will be open until the end of March for the 2017-2018 season. The Discovery Center has bigger plans, with their increased popularity every year, they have announced they have the intention to build a permanent, year-round facility. This building will still focus on their STEAM subjects but on a bigger scale. They plan to increase their age limit to 14 because they plan to incorporate exhibits for younger and older children, a wateDiscoveryCenterFinished-44r exhibit, a climbing exhibit, a building exhibit, and even outdoor exhibits. They plan to build community multi-purpose rooms, as well as educational classrooms.
