How to Love North Dakota Winters

Life naturally slows down in winter. The days grow shorter, the light becomes scarce, and we respond by planting ourselves in front of the television. Yes, it’s cold. We know. That doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the beautiful outdoors until May. Minot is filled with outdoor winter recreation, you just have to bundle up.

ICE SKATING & HOCKEY

The Minot Park District takes wonderful care of the outdoor rinks. Available for ice skating and hockey at Polaris Park, Roosevelt School, Perkett School, and Corbett Field. The rinks are open from December 15th to February 15th.

SLEDDING

Minot is one of the only places in North Dakota that has hills. Take advantage of that and go sledding! Minot has a designated sledding area at the Souris Valley Golf Course. Take the family and when your done go enjoy a nice cup of hot chocolate.

CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING

Skiing trails are located all around Minot. The Bison Plant, Souris Valley Golf Course, and Oak Park. Cross-country skiing is a great way to get in some fresh air and exercise. If you don’t have skis of your own, you can rent some from the Minot Park District.

SNOWMOBILING

For those of you that like to go fast, we have a trail system for you! Minot has 351 miles of groomed trails open from December 1st to April 1st, depending on the weather conditions.

ICE FISHING

You can drive to one of the nearby lakes to fish for some yellow perch, northern pike, and walleye. Lakes nearby are: Audubon, Darling, and Sakakawea.

CP HOLIDAY TRAIN

The Canadian Pacific Holiday Train will stop in Minot on December 15th, 2018. It will stop at Main Street Crossing in Downtown Minot. There will be hot beverages to keep you warm, music, lights, and the holiday spirit! The annual event is free for everyone! They just ask for a heart-healthy food donation for our local food bank.

In the winter it is important to do some self-care. Try going outside more often, getting plenty of sunlight, exercising, and practicing relaxation exercises. Go find your hat and gloves and Get Out & Play!
