Who is the SVAS?

Over a span of 40 years, the Souris Valley Animal Shelter has helped approximately 35,000 animals. They serve over 11 counties encompassing more than 75 miles, allowing us to take in about 75 animals per month. The shelter was opened because there was an absolute need and the community wanted another option besides the city-run pound—they, too, remain at capacity.

They take in all animals, except for wildlife though, they contact partners to assist if a wildlife animal is brought in, they do not have the capacity to house wildlife currently.

The SVAS does so much more than just providing a warm place for animals without a home. They provide micro-chipping and cremation services. They also provide free services to the community by taking in pets from domestic abuse situations, traveling with their pets to assisted living facilities to provide companionship to people who can no longer have pets, and they work with students K-6 every Thursday for “Read to the Pets” in order to promote better reading habits, stronger communications skills, and confidence in youth! They are always looking for volunteers!

People can help by donating food, toys, and money for the animals and their capital campaign.

Capital Campaign

The capital campaign’s purpose is to create a state-of-the-art animal shelter by expanding and updating the current building to provide the highest quality of care to pets in need while also saving more lives.

The current shelter as is no longer meets the standards for proper care. Current challenges include:

  • Increased stress to animals due to lack of space
  • No means to fully isolate ill or contagious animals
  • Lack of sufficient air flow
  • Lack of space to provide healthy exercise for shelter pets
  • Extreme facility issues with heating and plumbing

The expansion of the facility will address current challenges, allowing their organization to fulfill long-term goals and objectives that will ultimately save more lives. Overall, the Souris Valley Animal Shelter is falling to pieces and right before our eyes. The capital campaign will allow them to get the new building in place and provide a much safer place for the pets they shelter.

Plan for the new shelter.

With a massive goal to reach they are working hard to get there. The total cost is $3.5 million. Phase 1 alone (just to break ground and create the skeleton of the new building) will cost $1.5 million. They are $500,000 away from breaking ground, and they are hoping to do so in the next 8 months.

You can help by mailing a check specifically earmarked for the capital campaign or by donating directly to their capital campaign on Facebook. You can click here for their Facebook page.
